Body armour?

Hopefully this doesn't sound too stupid but my current film which I am trying to get into production required my main protagonist to wear body armour, the type usually seen being worn by armed police. The only problem being that it will cost quite a bit of money to actually buy a real one and I don't think my local police station will lend one out to me. As well as this living in the UK it will more likely than not be like gold dust getting them.

So I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to pick them up cheap or know how to make a good replica?
